Φιάσκο η ασφάλεια στο Λονδίνο λίγο πριν την τελετή έναρξης: o Βρετανικός στρατός θα καλύψει το κενό της εταιρίας G4S

Σάλος έχει προκληθεί στην Αγγλία μετά από τη δήλωση αδυναμίας της εταιρείας security των Ολυμπιακών αγώνων G4S να τηρήσει τους όρους του συμβολαίου της.

H G4S ανακοίνωσε την περασμένη εβδομάδα ότι δε θα μπορέσει να παραδώσει εγκαίρως τους 13.700 ειδικούς φρουρούς και 3.000 εθελοντές που σύμφωνα με το αρχικό συμβόλαιό της αξίας 361 εκατομμυρίων ευρώ θα είχαν μεταξύ άλλων την ικανότητα να εντοπίζουν βόμβες και να υποδέχονται τουρίστες. Μόλις 4.000 φρουροί είναι επαρκώς εκπαιδευμένοι για τους αγώνες που ξεκινούν στις 27 Ιουλίου ενώ ήδη χιλιάδες αθλητές και εθνικές αντιπροσωπείες καταφθάνουν στο Λονδίνο. 

Ο Βρετανικός τύπος βρίθει από καταγγελίες προσωπικού για ανεπαρκή εκπαίδευση καθώς και οργανωτική προχειρότητα από τη μεριά της G4S.

Η εταιρεία ενδέχεται να χάσει τουλάχιστον 60 εκατομμύρια ευρώ από το αρχικό της συμβόλαιo ενώ η αξία των μετοχών της έχει πέσει κατακόρυφα.

Κριτική ασκείται και στην Υπουργό Εσωτερικών Theresa May καθώς πηγές αναφέρουν ότι το υπουργείο της είχε προειδοποιηθεί για τα προβλήματα στον τομέα της ασφάλειας των αγώνων πριν 10 μήνες σε απόρρητη έκθεση.

Οι αποκαλύψεις για το φιάσκο αυξάνονται ώρα με την ώρα με πιο πρόσφατη τη δήλωση του εκθεσιακού κέντρου ExCeL που θα φιλοξενήσει σειρά αθλημάτων κατά τη διάρκεια των αγώνων, ότι είχε ενημερώσει την οργανωτική επιτροπή των αγώνων Locog για τα προβλήματα της G4S εδώ και μήνες.

Σύμφωνα με την εφημερίδα Independent, η G4S κέρδισε το συμβόλαιο με τη Locog μετά από πρόταση χαμηλότερη κατά 25% από την αμέσως πιο οικονομική προσφορά.

Ήδη ανακοινώθηκε ότι ο Βρετανικός στρατός θα καλύψει το κενό προσωπικού της G4S με 3.500 επιπλέον στρατιώτες, πολλοί από τους οποίους θα επιστρέψουν επειγόντως από το Αφγανιστάν μέσα στις επόμενες δύο εβδομάδες.

Ο CEO της εταιρείας Nick Buckles, ο οποίος παραμένει στη θέση του, ισχυρίστηκε πως έμαθε για τα εν λόγω προβλήματα μόλις πριν μερικές μέρες. O Buckles θα κληθεί να δώσει εξηγήσεις σε εξεταστική επιτροπή της Βρετανικής βουλής την ερχόμενη εβδομάδα.

Εν τω μεταξύ, κάτοικοι του ανατολικού Λονδίου προσέφυγαν σε δικαστήριο εναντίον του στρατού σε σχέση με την πρόθεσή του να εγκαταστήσει αντιπυραυλικό σύστημα στην ταράτσα πολυκατοικίας κατά τη διάρκεια των αγώνων. Το δικαστήριο απεφάνθη υπέρ του στρατού, με το σκεπτικό ότι οι πύραυλοι δεν αποτελούν απειλή για τους κατοίκους.

Να σημειωθεί ότι το κόστος των αγώνων υπολογίζεται να ανέλθει στα 14 δις ευρώ, ενώ αποτελεί ήδη την μεγαλύτερη κινητοποίηση σωμάτων ασφαλείας στην ιστορία της Βρετανίας με σύνολο 50.000 στρατιωτών, αστυνομίας και ειδικών φρουρών. Πρόσφατη έρευνα δείχνει πως μόνο 44% των Βρετανών πιστεύει ότι η χώρα τους έπρεπε να είχε φιλοξενήσει τους Ολυμπιακούς αγώνες.

On April 29 2012, shortly before the Greek May 6 election, dozens of women allegedly working illegally as sex workers were rounded up and taken into custody by Greek police in Athens. Rapid HIV testing was performed on them by Greek authorities at police stations where they were told they were being led for identification purposes. They were subsequently diagnosed HIV positive and were charged with “the intention of causing heavy bodily harm” while photographs of 17 of them at first, were published on the official Greek police website.

The case has caused uproar both in Greece and internationally for what human rights groups have called a clear violation of international laws for the protection from the deprivation of one’s freedom, right to consent to medical testing and medical confidentiality.

A team from the women’s organization Feministiki Protovoulia (Feminist Initiative) and the Centre for Research and Action on Peace, KEDE have visited the prisoners twice at Korydallos women’s prison in Athens where they are currently being held. Protovoulia claims that there are now 26 women held in the prison in relation to the case.

In a press conference held on Friday July 6 by Protovoulia, the group and several other human rights groups in attendance, condemned the “inhumane and humiliating conditions” of the women’s incarceration  and raised serious concerns over the conditions of their incarceration, their physical and mental health, the nature of the legal case brought against them and the circumstances of their arrest and subsequent medical testing by the Greek authorites.

Protovoulia has pledged its support to the women in any legal claim they may wish to raise against the authorities and individuals responsible for their ordeal.

The shaping of the pre-electoral landscape concludes with the final pitch of the leaders of the two parties which theoretically and practically, have a claim to power on June 18. Under the circumstances, PASOK has to a large extent withdrawn from the battle for leadership and is reserving for itself –as expressed by the statements of its leader Evangelos Venizelos– a regulatory role. The same goes for the Democratic Left which has also stated its intention to participate in a coalition government.

The rupture between Samaras (leader of conservative New Democracy) and Tsipras (the leader of left wing SYRIZA) reached a climax with the presentation of their pre-electoral commitments on Thursday and Friday respectively, thus shaping a new polarization around the dilemmas which they put forward clearly: “Memorandum or Drachma” and “Memorandum or Syriza.”
