Μετά τις ερωτήσεις πολλών δημοσιογράφων από την Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό σχετικά με τη μήνυση που είπε ότι θα καταθέσει η ΕΛ.ΑΣ εναντίον του radiobubble δημοσιεύουμε μια σύνοψη του τι συνέβη:

Λίγο μετά τα μεσάνυχτα της Παρασκευής (1 Νοέμβρη), γύρω στη μία και μισή, στον περιβάλλοντα χώρο του cafe-bar του radiobubble βρίσκονταν 10 περίπου άνθρωποι, παραγωγοί του radiobubble και μέλη της κοινότητας και συζητούσαν. Άλλοι κάθονταν στις καρέκλες του cafe, άλλοι ήταν όρθιοι και στέκονταν στην είσοδο του ραδιοφώνου.

Το πλήρωμα του περιπολικού της ΕΛ.ΑΣ. που πάρκαρε στην απέναντι πλευρά της Ιπποκράτους μας ζήτησε όλα τα έγγραφα που όφειλε να έχει το cafe για να λειτουργεί νόμιμα και του τα παραδώσαμε.
Μετά από τον έλεγχο των εγγράφων και αφού οι αστυνομικοί τα βρήκαν όλα νόμιμα, μας ενημέρωσαν ότι θα καταθέσουν μήνυση εναντίον του radiobubble για διατάραξη κοινής ησυχίας.
Στην ερώτησή μας "πως είναι δυνατόν να έχουμε άδεια να ακούγεται μουσική στο cafe μέχρι τις 3πμ και εσείς να μας μηνύετε για διατάραξη κοινής ησυχίας;", η απάντηση ήταν "δεν σας είπαμε κάτι για τη μουσική, οι ομιλίες ενοχλούν, μιλάτε δυνατά".

Meanwhile charges to the arrested have been upgraded from  misdemeanors to felonies, because of application of the law forbidding faces to be covered.

Between 21 and 24 November we realised, as announced, our first photo exhibition in Zurich. Quite out of the blue a team at the University of Zurich, that organised a festival for left, science and resistance, asked us to present some of our material. At the time there was no material, no photos, no ways to present anything, no blogs, no leaflets, no names not anything. Everything was setup with your help in a very limited time. But that’s the way things get started.

21 με 24 Νοεμβρίου πραγματοποιήσαμε, όπως είχαμε ανακοινώσει, μία πρώτη έκθεση φωτογραφίας στη Ζυρίχη. “Στα ξαφνικά” μια ομάδα από το Πανεπιστήμιο της Ζυρίχης που διωργάνωνε ένα φεστιβάλ για την αριστερά, την επιστήμη και την αντίσταση μας ζήτησε να παρουσιάσουμε κάποιο από το υλικό μας. Υλικό δεν υπήρχε, τρόπος παρουσίασης δεν υπήρχε, μπλογκ, σάιτ, φυλλάδια, όνομα, όλα άφαντα. Ολα στήθηκαν σε πολύ λίγο χρόνο χάρη στη δική σας βοήθεια και τη δική μας φορτική επιμονή. Αλλά έτσι ξεκινάνε αυτά, χωρίς πολλή κουβέντα.

A 17y.o. youth shot dead by a policeman in the Netherlands

A 17y.o. youth was shot dead by a policeman in The Hague, Netherlands, on Saturday 24 November in the morning,  at the Holland Spoor Railway Station.

Police got to the Railway Station, after it was denounced that an armed man was around.
The young boy was at one of the platforms, when the policemen asked him to put hands on the air. The boy moved his hands to his wrist, and then a policeman shot him. The boy succumbed to his injuries later in hospital.

During the weekend, the State police took statements from witnesses. Prosecutors said they got pictures and that a post-mortem examination was conducted. They also reported that the young man did not carry a weapon.

A silent march took place on Sunday evening:150 people attended. It was organized by friends of the boy and ended up at the platform where the boy was shot.

It was the fifth time this year that someone was fatally hit by a policeman's bullet. Last year five fatal incidents involving police officers were reported.

Dimanche 21 octobre, les résidents de Chalikidiki ont réalisé encore un rassemblement et manifestation à Skouries, afin de protester contre la concession d'une très grande superficie forestière à la compagnie canadienne El Dorado, qui compter utiliser la région pour extraire de l'or. Presque 2000 gens ont participé à la mobilisaiton et ont subi une violence policière et repression sans précédent. Certains ont dit que la police "avait comme but de les tuer", puisqu'à part l'utilisation habituelle des gaz lacrymogènes, la police a chassé les manifestants dans la forêt, tandis que plusieurs manifestants ont dénoncé que la police anti-émeute a cassé les fenêtres des voitures et lancé des gaz lacrymogènes à leur intérieur, pendant que les véhicules bougeaint.

Dans un cas, les policiers ont forcé une femme à sortir de son véhicule et l'ont battu très violemment, et par conséquent elle a dû être transférée à l'hôpital.

El Domingo, 21 de Octubre, los residentes de Jalkidikí realizaron una vez más una manifestación y una marcha hacía Skuriés para protestar en contra de la concesión de una gran superficie forestal a la empresa forestal canadiense El Dorado que tiene la intención de explotar el área para la extracción de oro. Aproximadamente 2.000 personas participaron en la movilización y sufrieron una violencia policial y represión sin precedentes. Algunos han afirmado que "la policía tenía como objetivo matarles", y más allá del gas lacrimógeno que es habitual, la policía inició una persecución de los manifestantes por el bosque. Muchos de los manifestantes se quejaron de que los antidisturbios rompían los cristales de los coches  y tiraban en el interior de ellos gases lacrimógenos mientras estaban en movimiento. En un caso, la policía sacó con violencia a una mujer de su coche y la golpearon tan brutalmente que acabó en urgencias en un hospital .

La forêt de Skouries, qui se trouve dans le nord de la Grèce, à la région de Chalkidiki, est devenu un champ de bataille dimanche soir, quand des manifestants locaux ont affronté la police. Presque 2000 manifestants ont marché en paix vers le site de la compagnie Eldorado. Ils protestent contre l'abattage d'une forêt entière, pour permettre à la minière canadienne de poursuivre l'extraction d'or, malgré le coût environnemental et humain néfaste de celle-ci, comme indiqué par plusieurs études d'impact. Encore une fois, le gouvernement soutient le pillage des ressources naturelles afin de satisfaire des compagnies grecques proches des partis gouvernementaux (Mpompolas) et leur complices internationaux (El Dorado), en livrant l'environnement et la santé des cioyens Grecs aux chasseurs de profit, et en mettant à la disposition de ces derniers la police grecque. La manifestation du dimanche dernier s'inscrit dans une série de mobilisations lors des derniers mois, qui ont été supprimées de façon violente par la police, qui a fait usage même de balles plastiques à d'autres occasions. Cette fois-ci les forces anti-émeutes avaient bloqué le passage à l'entrée du site et ont fait une utilisation sans mesure de lacrymogènes pour disperser la foule.

Skouries turned into a battlefield

The forest of Skouries in northern Greece's Halkidiki peninsula turned into a battlefield tonight as local villagers and Syriza leaning protesters clashed with riot police [see update below]. Approximately 2000 demonstrators marched peacefully to Eldorado company’s site over the severe environmental impact from its gold mining operations. Riot police squads had already blocked the way through the entrance and hurled teargas to disperse the crowd. 

There were multiple reports of outrageous police brutality going viral on twitter as the incident was not broadcasted by mainstream media. Officers reportedly smashed window cars down the road junction with passengers remaining inside, bashed elderly demonstrators, forced a woman to kneel before causing her leg injuries and broke photojournalist @nikospilos camera lens. Iliopoulos, member of Syriza youth movement reportedly said "they (police) were running after us all the way down for 7km and people got panicked. They hurled teargas inside the cars."

18 people were detained and led to the police department of Polygyro (capital of Halkidiki)  where another 150 gathered to express their solidarity. Following negotiations the detainees were finally allowed to see 4 lawyers. Syriza MP Katerina Igglezi was denied access into the premises and was reportedly assaulted by a plainclothes police officer on the spot. Detentions were converted to arrests but a pick-up truck driver was charged with attempted manslaughter although he was being transferred to hospital for heart issues as a teargas canister was thrown by police into his vehicle while driving.

Update 22/10/2012 by @IrateGreek: Among those present in the demonstration were anti-mining protesters from Kilkis and Thrace, whose regions are also threatened with environmental disaster due to mining plans. Also present were environmental activists from Thessaloniki, two MPs of SYRIZA, a former EuroMP of the Eco-Greens and a representative from the Independent Greeks' party.

"Corpus Christi" censoring attempts and the politics of faith in Greece

Back in May of 1998, Manhattan Theater Club (MTC) in NY cancelled the scheduled production of the three-times Tony Award winner Terrence McNally’s Corpus Christi play, prompted by anonymous telephone threats to burn down the prolific theater and kill its staff and the playwright. The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights that was already campaigning against the play for blasphemy, disavowed responsibility for the phone-calls.  Those developments swiftly sparked outrage in the artistic community over the religious group's intimidation and MTC's administration for backing off and not standing firm.

Did one in two Greek policemen really vote for Golden Dawn?

A lot has been said about the fact that large numbers of Greek policemen are supporters and voters of the neo-nazi party Golden Dawn. The first publication of this sort in a mainstream newspaper was an article by Vasilis Lambropoulos in To Vima on 11 May 2012, where he concluded that data from specific polling stations where policemen vote showed that some 50% of policemen had actually voted for Golden Dawn in the 06 May elections. Today, Lambropoulos published another article, saying that this tendency had been confirmed in the 17 June elections.

Police abuse caught on camera

The video below goes viral across social media at the moment, showing a bunch of police officers - a couple of them in plain clothes - abusing verbally and physically an immigrant while being in custody. The man allegedly set alight a trash bin, putting at risk the cars parked in close proximity. The Facebook user who uploaded the footage 6 hours ago, has reported the incident at the UN Refugee Agency of Greece, claiming it took place in the end of January (2012) without confirming the exact location though.

"Cop bashing" could be an accurate description of police tactics aiming at halting demonstrations, putting the right to protest at stake, although ordinary citizens are not the only ones being intimidated. Riot policemen have repeatedly assaulted members of the press while covering protests in Greece. 


A formal investigation has been ordered over the assault of several journalists by riot police officers during the latest peaceful demonstrations triggered by the austerity suicide of the 77 years old pensioner.
Marios Lolos, president of the Photojournalists' Association was taken to hospital tonight suffering severe head injuries that might need surgery, following Rena Maniou, redundant reporter from ANT1, who was sent for medical treatment yesterday.

Another dramatic incident amid austerity was added on the long list of suicides over financial burden this morning in Syntagma square, central Athens, during rush hour. The 77 years old  retired pharmacist, allegedly said "I don't want to leave my children in debt" before taking his own life with a handgun near a tube exit. Passersby froze when the shot was heard. Sources said the man left a suicide note expressing his resentment over the government that left him hopeless:


Tsolakoglou* occupation government has literally nullified any chance of my survival that was based on a decent pension, to which I've been the sole contributor for 35 years without any state financial aid.
Since my age doesn't help for sheer resistance (of course without rejecting the possibility that if a Greek were to grab a Kalashnikov first, I'd be the second following) I see no other solution but a decent end (of my life) before I start searching for food into trash bins. I believe that one day, youths with no future will take up arms and hang upside-down those national traitors, as Italians did to Mussolini (in piazza Pareto-Milan) back in 1945."


With Greeks being dragged into the downward spiral of financial and psychological insecurity -to put it mildly- the suicide rate has increased by 40% in the first months of 2011. The incident triggered spontaneous demonstrations coordinated through Facebook in Athens and Thessaloniki . Hundreds of people have gathered already in Syntagma sq   where riot police has formed a defensive ring outside the parliament.

Η ανάρτηση φωτογραφιών διαφόρων ατόμων από τα πρόσφατα επεισόδια και τους βανδαλισμούς στο κέντρο της Αθήνας έγινε έπειτα από σχετική Εισαγγελική Διάταξη αναφέρει σε ανακοίνωσή της η ΕΛΑΣ, με αφορμή σχετικά δημοσιεύματα, ενώ, παράλληλα, τονίζει πως «η εφαρμογή των νόμων αφορά όλους τους πολίτες».

Στην ίδια ανακοίνωση τονίζεται ότι:

• Οι φωτογραφίες των αγνώστων προσώπων που αναρτήθηκαν αφορούν δράστες κακουργηματικών πράξεων που τελέσθηκαν κατά τη διάρκεια συγκεντρώσεων πολιτών στο κέντρο της Αθήνας
• Η ανάρτηση τους πραγματοποιήθηκε ύστερα από σχετική Εισαγγελική Διάταξη που εκδόθηκε σύμφωνα με τις επιταγές του νόμου, των δικονομικών και συνταγματικών εγγυήσεων.
• Σύμφωνα με το άρθρο 24 του ν. 2121/1993, επιτρέπεται η αναπαραγωγή έργων πνευματικής ιδιοκτησίας, όπως οι φωτογραφίες, εφόσον υπηρετείται το δημόσιο συμφέρον, σύμφωνα με την κρίση των αρμόδιων Εισαγγελικών Αρχών.
• Η εφαρμογή των νόμων αφορά όλους τους πολίτες και ουδείς εξαιρείται ή τυγχάνει προνομιακής μεταχείρισης.

"Greece en rage", might be an accurate description of what happened today.

• Several preventive detentions in Athens took place before even the demo starts. 
• Massive turnout as expected.The crowd was dispersed very early though, around 17:30-18:00 when tensions aroused on the front side of the demo and riot police officers started hurling teargas to repel demonstrators on the lower side of the square.
• The demo was split, but protesters remained en masse in the nearby roads, to avoid clouds of tear gas filling the air...which was literally unbearable. With sheer determination they attempted to get back on the spot but riot squad tactics were aimed at halting the demo. This cat-and-mouse chase kept for 3,5 hours.
• There were reports by journalists of policemen attacking on random people, protesting peacefully.
• Paul Mason, the BBC correspondent was attacked by a bunch of far right protesters as they thought he was German. The worst was prevented thanks to other people's intervention.
• Clashes spread across the city, with banks and retail outlets set on fire. Estimated number of arsoned buildings at 10  45.
• 100 people suffered injuries, while 74 have been arrested and 92 detained.
• In Thessaloniki 28.000 people demonstrated (including PAME members) and clashes broke out between protesters and riot police as well.

Caso Menacius

La detencion del periodista ciudadano griego A.D. -utilizando el username @Menacius en el Twitter- ha provocado durante los dos últimos días la movilizacion de los usuarios de la Red, pidiéndo su liberación.

En el 6 de diciembre, durante las demostraciones organizados para conmemorar Alexis Grigoropoulos (el joven de 16 años que fue asesinado por un policía en el 6/12/2009), la policía griega realizo 21 arrestos y 46 detenciones de personas. Entre los detenidos, fue @Menacius, que en el momento estaba cubriendo la manifestación para Omnia.TV, un medio ciudadano digital. Aparte de periodista ciudadano, @Menacius es también conocido como miembro de la iniciativa internacional "un barco para Gaza". El activismo de @Menacius como periodista ciudadano es además evidente desde un artículo reciente en el periódico Kathimerini y se confirme por sus amigos y compañeros.

Estas características indican la gran importancia de su detención, dado que el momento de su detención @Menacius estada transmitiendo los enfrentamientos entre la policía y los manifestantes.

Además, la detención debe considerarse en el contexto de la fuerte vigilancia que se nota últimamente, junto con la doctrina de "tolerancia cero" que la policía aplicó por la táctica de controles y detenciones preventivas durante los demos del 6 de diciembre.

De acuerdo con el comunicado de prensa del movimiento "Un barco a Gaza", @Menacius salió a cubrir las manifestaciones para el canal alternativo Omnia TV, pero fue detenido [...] su equipo fue confiscado por las fuerzas policiales. Él fue acusado de manera escandalosa de delitos de alteración a la paz, quebrantamiento de la Ley de Armas (por lanzar piedras), intento de causar daño físico y la afiliación a un grupo de jóvenes lanzando cócteles molotov.

Después de haber sido detenido en el cuartel de la policía durante la noche del miércoles, ayer se llevó a cabo ante el fiscal junto con el resto de los detenidos. Los menores de edad fueron puestos en libertad. Los demas, entre ellos @Menacius, seran llevados antes el fiscal junto a las 9.30 por la mañana de viernes, sin poder invitar testigos.

ACTUALIZACIÓN, 9/12, 15h00

Un poco antes de las 14.30, @Menacius ha sido puesto en libertad por decisión de la Oficina del Fiscal. Sigue estar acusado de alteración a la paz, que es un delito menor.
Ademas, tres alemanes, un español y un portugués fueron liberados con el pago de garantías y los demas bajo la condición restrictiva de presentarse a la policía.
